Oral Cancer Screenings Are Provided at Your Dental Checkups

Posted .

Our dentists, Dr. Brian Hockel, Dr. Rebecca Jardine, and Dr. Kevin Adair, care about you, your smile, your oral health, and your overall health. This is why we provide oral cancer screenings during your checkup. This treatment is preventative, so it’s included in your dental checkup. In fact, you might not even know we provide it! It’s a quick and easy way to ensure your mouth is cancer free.

The goal of an oral cancer screening is to detect mouth cancer at the early stages. This is because there is a greater chance of curing the disease at the early stages. If you keep up with your dental checkups as recommended, there is a good chance your dentist can catch the cancer in time.

Your oral cancer screening will be provided during the oral exam portion of the appointment. While your dentist is checking your teeth for cavities, he or she is also checking the gums, cheeks, tongue, lips, and throat for signs of oral cancer. If a sign is spotted, a biopsy will need to be performed, which means sampling the tissue and sending it to a medical lab for examination. The later steps would be discussed with you at that time.
